Subject: The Story Behind the Title
Subject: The Story Behind the Title
"In the Year 2889" was a story by Jules Verne and his son Michel about life a thousand years after the story was printed. When "Master of the World" made money for American International Pictures, they planned to make a film based on this story and registered the "In the Year 2889" title. They ended up not making the Verne movie, but when they hired Larry Buchanan to remake "The Day the World Ended," they tacked on this left-over title to it, confusing many viewers...and Internet Archive reviewers! :)
Another Azalea film. Having lived in Texas, where these movies were made, I know that Azaleas are planted to drive away cockroachs. Shows that the Schlockmeister had a sense of irony, eh?

...and fashion hadn't changed one iota nor has architectural styling? I's changed dramatically in 43 years, but heck, the 60s styles were so wonderful we just all decide to go back to them for almost 1000 years. How quaint. Even peoples speaking dialects haven't changed in 1000 years! Even the cowboy is still around then. LOL

I love the voice of Fletcher and the movie, while relishing in its cult status, is worth a view for all B-movie lovers. If you are like me and enjoy anything 60's or 70's, or if you are one of those who like the "so bad their good" films, then this is the top of the line. I found it very entertaining in a so bad it's good kinda way lol. Just a solid Larry Buchanan classic!!! Bill Thurman was always good as an old Texas-style lawman, drunk or local yokel in these films...always enjoy watching Thurman!

At least it was for me when I watched it repeatedly on DVD, while cooped up sick in bed, one recent long, hot summer. I love this film while others despise it, but then, to each his own! But to understand the previous reviewer's issue with the film's strange title, a little background will enlighten:
"After the success of their earlier motion picture Master of the World (1961), American International Pictures had planned to make another film based on a Jules Verne story, In the Year 2889, however the project was later shelved. A few years later, when Larry Buchanan was given the script of AIP's earlier film The Day the World Ended (1955) to remake, a new title was needed. Since AIP had already registered the In the Year 2889 title, it was tacked onto the Buchanan film."
And THAT is where the crazy, ill-fitting, seemingly nonsensical title came from. For me, it only adds to the film's aura of strange, dreary otherworldliness.

This is an incredible movie because it has no credibility. In the Year 2889!? Don't know where that title came from. It's so 1960's looking. The furnishings of the house which is the only setting, are far older even than the 60s. Actually, this seems to be a remake (more likely ripoff) of the 1955 movie The Day The World Ended. I always liked that one, and at least it didn't pretend to be futuristic. 2889?! But if you can ignore all that, I suppose it could get a two-star rating.
